About

Artist Simon Harris

Although I live in Sydney, the rough-hewn monoliths of Europe have always enthralled me.

A visit to Stonehenge decades ago led to a fascination with the use of stone in the human journey of art and ritual. The rocks seemed to have an innate power and grace, it’s not hard to imagine the awe that our ancestors must have felt in their presence.

I strive to draw on that primeval power to express the dignity and purity of the human condition, stripped of racism, ageism and sexism. And by exploring delicately balanced compositions there is also a hint of the vulnerability that lends a particularly human aspect to these figures.

These drawings are an amalgam of a lifelong study of the human form, a respect for pre-history’s first artists, and an awe of the primitive majesty of this most ancient of materials.
