Matisse Story

Although based on a sketch of mine from a Life Drawing session, this rock figure
always seemed to channel some of the stylised cut outs by the great Post-Impressionist painter Henri Matisse.

In the final few years of his life he was incapacitated with cancer and confined to
a wheelchair. Painting became too hard so his creative output consisted of paper
cut outs, the most famous of these being his ‘Blue Nudes’ series.

He aimed to capture the essence of form by simplifying shapes and fracturing the
human form.

My homage to Matisse also uses simplified shapes and fractured form, although
mine are rather more solid and 3 dimensional.
