The Second Pole Story

In 1917 philosopher and theologian, Rudolph Otto, defined two poles of experience when a human encounters the transcendent or divine.

The first pole is the ‘mysterium tremendum’, a daunting, awe-inspiring mystery of overwhelming power. The second pole is the ‘mysterium fascinans’, the enchanting mystery, where we happily surrender to that benevolent power.

This work draws on the primeval power and grace of stone to express the raw human experience in this moment of mysterium fascinans.

This could be a child gazing at the loving face of their parent, or a teenager transfixed in wonder at the moon, or a believer encountering God.
